You have until June 30st to buy American Airlines miles with a special bonus offer. Your AAdvantage account must be at least 30 days old to participate in this promotion. If you maximize this promotion and purchase 150,000 miles, you will receive 250,000 miles for $4,311, i.e. a cost of approximately 1.724 cents/mile. This is better than the 1.81 cents/mile offer we wrote about in April.
American Airlines has plenty of Oneworld partner carriers serving destinations across the globe to redeem on. How many AAdvantage miles do you need for your dream trip? Here you can find the award chart including redemptions from all the regions.
Let us give you few examples (excluding airline taxes) of round-trip fares assuming your are purchasing miles @ 1.724 cents per mile and redeeming for flights from the USA:
USA - JAPAN/KOREA JAL Business Class is 120,000 miles (~$2,069)
USA - JAPAN/KOREA JAL First Class is 180,000 miles (~$3,104)
USA - HK/SE ASIA Cathay Pacific Business Class is 140,000 miles (~$2,414)
USA - EUROPE AA Business Class is 115,000 miles (~$1,983)
USA - SOUTH AMERICA LAN Business Class is 115,000 miles (~$1,983)
We do not suggest buying and hoarding these miles. That being said, if you are in the middle of planning a trip and wanted to fly First or Business class cabin, as you could see from the examples above this promotion could be a very good value.
American Airlines will let you hold your awards for 5 days, so you may want to find the availability first, put the award flights on hold and then buy the miles to be able to ticket the reservation. Availability for LAN, Cathay Pacific and JAL wont be displayed on the AA website but can be found on the British Airways website (requires registration, free to join).
Have you bought AA miles before to save money on Business and First class airfare? Do you plan on participating in this promotion? Let us know in the comments section!
